Dealing with depression in Marriage

Depression and Marriage

People suffering from depression mostly prefer to be alone. They do not want anyone to invade their personal space and there is no exception to this. We like to spend some time alone when we are depressed. And this is why dealing with depression gets more difficult when you are married.

In times of depression one needs extra care, support and understanding. Couples are very understanding and caring during dating period. But once they get married and move under one roof, it is all about what do I get in return for the sacrifices I made till now? In such a selfish scenario, if one of the partners starts suffering from depression, marriage gets a serious blow. Suddenly all the love is out of the window and both partners are now wondering why they got married.

How do you save your marriage when you are depressed?

Communication is the key to solving this problem. This is a time when the heart to heart communication is missing. And the desire to separate starts to seep in. Both the partners are guessing what the other partner is thinking. If you ask both the partners on separate occasions whether they find their spouse selfish, both would say yes.

Depression is the kind of sickness that does not have any external symptoms. It’s all in the mind. It’s like you are living in a black hole. There seems to be no meaning in life and unfortunately you do not get any facial rashes for thinking like this. So no matter how sad you are, your partner is not going to know that you are suffering from depression. The only few external signs of depression are sudden weight loss or weight gain, too much sleeping or too less sleeping, restlessness, feelings of self condemning, problems with concentration and finally pains in the body that you don’t have a good reason for.

Dealing with it!

One of the most important steps over here is to understand that you are suffering from depression. Next, talk to your spouse about it and explain the symptoms. This should be done even if you feel there isn't going to be a positive outcome. And if you are the one who is dealing with a depressed partner then understand that you are in a very delicate situation. A lot of patience and care is needed. In most cases depression can be seasonal and would end in couple of days. It can also be fixed by taking care of an eating disorder or sleeping disorders. Both of these disorders are major reasons for seasonal depression. Lastly, if these things are not helping then look for professional help.

Remember always to communicate your mind at all times to your partner, whether depressed or not, this will take care of many problems and will act as an antibiotic to divorce.
